A system notification has just been sent out to our customers.
As always, we are continuously improving our service. This time we are considering to upgrade Shadowsocks encryption method from “aes-256-cfb” to one of the best AEAD Ciphers “chacha20-ietf-poly1305” (Please see attached a quote for AEAD).
We are currently in the “evaluation and testing phases”, will announce once it is proved to be reliable and turns into production (Date TBD).
In the meanwhile, please prepare for it, by looking into your Shadowsocks Client application, to see if you do have this “chacha20-ietf-poly1305” option under the Encryption Method. If by any chance you do not find this option, feel free to let us know by sending a screenshot, we will be happy to help you with that.
Quote: “AEAD stands for Authenticated Encryption with Associated Data. AEAD ciphers simultaneously provide confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity. They have excellent performance and power efficiency on modern hardware. Users should use AEAD ciphers whenever possible.”
Also an RFC7539 Reference for “chacha20-ietf-poly1305”.
Update: I tested at the same time on the same server, without or with AEAD Ciphers, by streaming a 4K YouTube video. (My local bandwidth has max dl speed of 50 Mbps)
Configuration 1: SS + BBR + w/o AEAD
Configuration 2: SS + BBR + with AEAD, in which case it was actually outperforming!
